Forklift Tank Safety
The propane powered forklift is one of the most popular types of lift trucks. These vehicle are powered by propane, that come with some considerations that should be accounted for. It is vital that PPE or also known as Personal Protective Equipment is worn at all times to be safe.
PPE
Propane gas is very cold. Very cold in fact that exposure to your skin can cause serious burns to occur. Whenever you are exchanging the propane tank or re-fueling, be sure to put on goggles or a full face shield and thick gloves. PPE is a requirement to be utilized on site in order to keep the operator as safe as possible. PPE is a standard workplace requirement for most companies using this type of machine and if the operator does not have the right things on, such as a hardhat, safety goggles, steel-toe boots and so on than he or she will be forbidden from utilizing the machine.
Inspect the Valve
Before connecting the fuel line in the process of exchanging the tank, make sure that the new tanks valve is turned off. This is really important because when you are inserting the fuel line into an open valve, you would release the propane gas. This situation could result in a potentially dangerous situation.
Fire Extinguisher
Another important safety measure to have implemented is to have a fire extinguisher nearby when the tank is being changed or fuel is being added. Most businesses have fire extinguishers situated next to the refueling station. It is better to have one nearby and not need it, than to need one and not have one handy. Most safety rules need this is set up on site as well.
Secure the Tank
Most propane tanks have either a strap or a restraining device to secure the tank to the equipment. Be sure that this device is correctly working and utilized correctly so that you can prevent the tank from shifting or falling, since this could also lead to a dangerous condition.
