Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
Made for construction sites, where materials should be transported on surfaces which are not paved are rough terrain forklifts. The proper and safe use of rough terrain forklifts is important to guarantee the safety of both the operator and other personnel at the work location.
Terrain
These trucks are built for rough terrain, but care must still be taken in order to avoid tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and when lifting, must just be operated on level ground.
Speed
Even though there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations governing forklift speed limitations, forklift drivers must drive at a safe speed at all times. Driving on terrain that is uneven or rough requires even more caution. Steering, in particular, could be very dangerous at faster speeds.
Incline
When you are operating on a slope, you must keep the load on the machine's uphill side. The rule of thumb is drive up, and then back down. Do not attempt to raise a load while operating on a sloped surface. The change in the center of gravity can cause the machine to tip over.
Safety Devices
Like any driver, forklift drivers are obliged to put on seat belts. Check that the overhead guard is firmly in position. Depending on the working environment, eye and hearing protection may need to be worn. Check that a working fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
The operating conditions of a forklift could be affected by weather conditions. Speed, turning and load handling might need to be adjusted to ensure safety when operating a forklift in ice, rain or snow.
